Bougainville police concerned about frustrated ex-combatants

Police from the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville have expressed concerns of a possible uprising by frustrated members of the Resistance Force because two foreigners expelled two weeks ago from the island were not charged.

Bougainville Police and Justice Minister Ezekiel Masatt says any uprising would be the fault of national government authorities, who did not deal with Australian Jeffery Richards and British James Nessbitt criminally.

The Post Courier reports that Mr Masatt said this following comments by Deputy Police Commissioner Gari Baki that his officers were satisfied with an interview with the controversial advisers.

Although satisfied, Mr Baki had said the interview would have been more fruitful had there been witnesses from Bougainville's "no-go-zone", which is off limits to the Government.

Mr Masatt says the ex-combatants had wanted serious charges to be laid against the expatriates, as they themselves were criminally dealt with in relation to their involvement in the resistance force during the Bougainville crisis.
