NZ foreign minister says NZAID in good shape

6:42 pm on 31 March 2006

A spokesperson for the New Zealand foreign minister, Winston Peters, says a review of the New Zealand aid agency NZAID is pleasing and that it has made excellent progress in its first three years.

A just released report on NZAID, put together by Dr Marilyn Waring, praises the organisation, but is critical of the lack of co-ordination among the various government departments involved.

The executive director of New Zealand's Council for International Development, Rae Julian, points to the way the Ministry of Educations continues to award tertiary scholarships, when NZAID's emphasis is on basic education.

But a spokesperson for Mr Peters says the review place some time ago and in the intervening time many of Dr Waring's recommendations have already been implemented, while others are under consideration.
