The Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao, has arrived in Fiji to become the first Chinese premier to visit the Pacific Island countries, as Beijing steps up its diplomatic offensive in the region.

Mr Wen was greeted at Nadi airport by the Fiji Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase after arriving from Australia with a large party including ministers, officials, business representatives and media.

He is to hold talks with Mr Qarase and sign five bilateral aid and cooperation agreements between China and Fiji.
