8:17 pm on 5 April 2006

Solomon Islands first national elections since 2001 have been completed with police saying the poll proceeded peacefully throughout the country.

It is the first election conducted since the arrival of the regional assistance mission or RAMSI in 2003.

802 polling stations catered for a potential voter turnout in excess of 340,000 while about 130 local and international observers kept an eye on the process..

Our reporter Linda Skates says reports received so far indicate the poll went extremely well.
