The Tongan government says it is considering partnering with private sector investors in the ownership of electricity generation and distribution assets currently owned by Shoreline.

The government says it's pleased to be working with the Shoreline Group in securing the best ownership structure and regulatory framework for the electricity sector.

It is now seeking expressions of interest from suitable investors.

The Government is also reviewing the regulation of generation, transmission and electricity retail activities.

The statement comes following criticism in recent years of the high cost of electricity and the management of Shoreline.

The Crown Prince Tupouto'a is a shareholder of Shoreline.
