PNG Prime Minister says reshuffle was to help foster economic opportunities for the people

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Sir Michael Somare, has issued a statement aimed at allaying concerns over a recent cabinet reshuffle.

Among the changes were the removing of the Finance portfolio from Bart Philomen in favour of Patrick Pruaitch.

Mr Philomen remains Treasurer.

Sir Michael says the changes are aimed at ensuring more of the Government's programme is implemented, especially increasing economic opportunities for the people.

He says there have been problems with plans put in place but money not made available.

Sir Michael says, while MPs forever talk about the impact of urban drift, little is being done to improve opportunities or service delivery in rural areas.

He is promising further reshuffles.
