New Solomons MP claims sovereignty infringements

3:48 pm on 10 April 2006

A new Solomon Islands MP, Charles Dausebea, says the country's sovereignty has been tampered with in recent times.

Mr Dausabea who had lost his Honiara seat in the previous election is one of about 25 new MPs chosen in last week's parliamentary election for a 50-member house.

He says the country needs to be more assertive with the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission which arrived in 2003 for an open-ended task to restore order.

"I think the first and foremost I see is the sovereignty has been tampered with, the sovereignty of this country. I've seen certain forces have taken over the machinery that runs the government system."
