Fiji's critically important tourism industry is bracing itself for job cuts on the back of a drop in hotel occupancy rates.

Fiji TV says industry insiders are warning that recent statements by the Fiji Visitors Bureau claiming the industry is enjoying buoyant growth are far from true.

The president of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, Dixon Seeto, says hoteliers are now working very closely with unions to readjust staffing levels.

Mr Seeto says if necessary the first to be laid off will be part time employees who come in when demand is high.

He says they are also looking at laying off full time staff is the situation does not reverse itself soon.
