French high commission receives Goro demonstrators

3:33 pm on 12 April 2006

The French high commission in New Caledonia has this morning received a delegation of employees of the Goro Nickel company who are now out of work.

The company suspended operations indefinitely after Kanak activists wrecked 10 million US dollars worth of machinery and installations at its sites in the territory's south.

The French high commission has issued a statement to say it has taken note of the views expressed by the demonstrators.

It has restated its mission to assure public safety and to foster a dialogue without which no development can take place.
