No nominations for Solomon top job hours before deadline

4:22 pm on 13 April 2006

Nominations are about to close in Solomon Islands for candidates for the prime ministership.

By midday, no name had been put forward for the top job which in the past four years had been held by Sir Allan Kemakeza.

Elections for a new 50-member house were held a week ago and negotiations have so far failed to produce any official candidate for next Tuesday's meeting of parliament to choose a new head of government.

The election failed to give a majority to any political group and coalition discussions have been intense.
