American Samoan inflation rate drops to 4.6%

The American Samoa Consumer Price Index says inflation dropped to 4.6 percent during the first quarter of 2006 from 4.9 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.

The report, which covers January to March 2006 says the overall index registered at 130.8 points, an increase of 0.2 percent points from the previous quarter.

Meanwhile, a drop in gasoline prices during the first quarter of 2006 and lower costs for vehicle maintenance and operation resulted in a decrease of 0.7 percent in the Transportation Group.

The CPI report also cited an increase of 0.9 percent in the Housing Group due to rises in the cost of utilities, construction materials, household supplies and other household items.
