Fiji church leader says clergy should stay out of politics

A prominent member of the Methodist Church in Fiji says the church should leave politics to the politicians and concentrate on uniting the country.

The Reverend William Lucas made the comments after the President of the church, blessed the launch of the ruling SDL Party's election campaign and called on the Almighty to be with it.

The Reverend Lucas, who heads the Indian Division of the church, says it is important that the church does not take sides with any political party.

He says the church should be wary when involving itself in party campaigns.

"If it's just to take devotion than it's OK but I think the church has to be careful, that we should not align ourselves with any political party because it might build fear in the minds of our people."
