Fiji police at closed Vatakoula gold mine

Fiji's Tactical Response Unit of the police say its officers will remain at the Vatukoula gold mine until further notice.

The Emperor Gold Mining Company announced last week that the mine was to close for the first time in 70 years, leaving the future of nearly 2,000 workers in doubt.

The company has lost 23 million US dollars in the last 21 months and all operations have now been stopped for six months.

Superintendent Jo Nisha says police are monitoring security and maintaining law and order at the closed mine.

"So we are just there to keep the peace and stay until the company and the workers have settled their issues."
