The Governor of American Samoa is considering ways to get cheaper air fares for travellers from Pago Pago to Honolulu.

Hawaiian Airlines has monopolized the air route for more than a decade, and last February the governor raised concerns with Hawaiian over its high airfares.

Governor Togiola Tulafono says one option is a charter arrangement.

He says the other is to involve the government and a local company as shareholders in a joint venture to offer services between American Samoa, Hawaii and possibly the US mainland.
