Solomons MP, Manasseh Sogavare, tipped as new prime minister

The MP widely expected to be the next Solomon Islands' Prime Minister says he believes order has been restored to the country after the change of government.

The election of Prime Minister, Snyder Rini, last week triggered riots in the capital, Honiara.

He resigned yesterday before a vote of no confidence in Parliament that he was certain to lose, after some of his MPs defected to the Opposition.

Manasseh Sogavare who led the defections, is expected to be voted in as next Prime Minister on Monday.

Mr Sogavare says he has the support of the people and there will be no repeat of last week's violence.

"If we address the issues that people are concerned with we should see a reduction in the threat to law and order and thus the need for more security forces."
