Preliminary findings by the Kiribati statistics office show that the population has grown to just over 92,000.
The commissioner in charge of the census, Aritita Tekaieti, says the figure from last year's count is preliminary and will be finalised by June.
She says the analysis should take less than a year, with work now being done to determine the predominant age groups.
