Prosecutors in New Caledonia have asked for a three-month jail sentence for a union leader, Sylvain Nea, who led a strike at the SLN nickel company last year.
The prosecution also wants the leader of the CSTNC union to be given a 10,000 US dollar fine for the disturbances caused by him and his supporters.
Their blockades caused major traffic disruptions, forced banks and businesses to close and saw the port of Noumea shut until police intervened.
The strike was triggered over demands that two workers be reinstated.
SLN incurred about 40 million US dollars in losses as a result of intermittent stoppages over four months.
