PNG health minister to visit Angau

The governor of Morobe province in Papua New Guinea says the Health Minister, Dr Puka Temu, will visit Angau hospital next week after doctors said the second largest hospital in the country could close in less than two years.

According to the hospital board, Angau Memorial is severely underfunded and has a major termite problem which needs to be addressed if the buildings are to maintained.

Luther Wenge says the national government should have provided more funding and the hospital board should have managed the situation better.

Mr Wenge says he has asked the health minister for emergency funding.

"By Tuesday, Wednesday he should go to Angau and see for himself but the situation there, definitely Angau is in big trouble and we need to attend to this thing."

Mr Wenge has asked his legal team to see whether there is a legal case to answer because the lack facilities as it is now a human rights issue.
