A Fiji general election candidate standing against the Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, for the Ba Open seat says he has been threatened with death.

The Fiji Times reports that Faiaz Ali, who is standing for the ruling SDL party, has reported the threat to police.

Mr Ali is quoted as saying he was driving between Lautoka and Ba at about midday yesterday when he received the threat on his mobile phone

He said the caller told him not to talk about Mr Chaudhry at any of the SDL meetings.

Mr Ali is pleading with the police to investigate the matter, adding that while the threat does not frighten him, he has a young family to look after.
