Fiji police are deploying 1,500 officers to provide security during the general election, which gets under way tomorrow.

They will also have three units from their tactical response division on standby should any trouble arise.

However the assistant commissioner of police operations, Samuela Matakibau says there's been no indication from their national intelligence service that there's any threat on the horizon.

Assistant Commissioner Matakibau says the main function of the police will be to support election officials.

"They will be the ones securing the polling stations, escorting of ballot papers, security all storage areas should it necessitate that it be kept overnight and also the securing of the four counting centres throughout the country."

He says the tactical response teams will take over and secure the counting of votes once polling is over.
