An American Samoan jury has acquitted a man charged with possession of crystal methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Nikolao Alo was arrested last October after a car chase with police in Utulei.

It was alleged that in the pursuit Mr Alo threw a container filled with drugs from the car.

One member of the jury told media yesterday after the verdict was read that the police failed to prove that the container belonged to Mr Alo.

The juror said that the police also did not prove Mr Alo's fingerprints were on the container.

The assistant attorney general expressed disappointment at the acquittal.
