Fiji's electoral commission blames elections office for mistakes

9:49 am on 13 May 2006

The chairman of Fiji's Electoral Commission says the Elections Office must be blamed for the large number of people who have not been able to vote because their names were not on the electoral rolls.

Graham Leung made the comment on Fiji TV just as the country enters its final day of polling today.

Mr Leung says the Elections Office should have done a better job in the registration of voters

He says they are all responsible for the mistakes and errors which have come back to haunt them.

But Mr Leung says despite the mistakes, the final outcome of the election should still be a free, fair and credible poll.

Mr Leung says if there are election petitions, the Elections Office will cross that bridge when they get to it.
