The Election Office in American Samoa will begin accepting registration for candidates to run in the November 2006 general election from June 5th to September 1st.

The Election Office says its is making the announcement in advance to give people enough time to gather the necessary information to register.

This year, voters in the territory go to the polls to elect the Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives and the local House.

Under local laws, candidates for these political offices are nominated by petition, made available by the Election Office.

To be nominated as a candidate for the local House race, the petition must be signed by 25 registered voters of the district from which he or she is seeking election.

For the congressional race, the petition must be signed by 300 registered voters.

In the congressional race, incumbent Faleomavaega Eni has already made clear he is seeking re-election this year.
