More legislation recommended to improve woeful health figures on Nauru

A draft strategy to tackle lifestyle diseases on Nauru has recommended legislation to better regulate smoking and alcohol on the island.

A recent survey by the World Health Organisation, or WHO, on lifestyle risk factors showed that Nauru has high levels of diabetes, smoking, and a high level of alcohol consumption.

It also shows that less than 5-per cent of the population consume fruit and vegetables on a daily basis, and more than 60 per cent of the population is obese with a rapid increase after age 24.

And the overall life expectancy for men is 49 years of age.

The Pacific Commission's Tobacco and Alcohol advisor Dr Harley Stanton says they held a workshop with the WHO in early May to develop the health strategy with the Nauruan government.

"They're certainly wanting to increase taxes on tobacco and legislation on smoke free environments and increasing regulation of alcohol and its distribution within the island and in a number of areas they had no regulation."

Dr Stanton says they will revise the draft strategy in July.
