PNG calls for improved border security among Melanesian Spearhead Group countries

The Papua New Guinea Foreign Affairs secretary has called for improved border security among the Melanesian Spearhead Group countries.

Gabriel Pepson told an inaugural MSG sub-committee meeting on regional security that undesirable people had abused the existing MSG arrangements which allowed for free movement by citizens through the countries.

Mr Pepson says the abuse of the arrangements also had a negative effect on issues of sovereignty as well as the conduct of relations among the MSG countries.

He says the MSG countries must assist each other in sharing expertise, ideas, and information so as to develop and maintain a peaceful and stable region.

Mr Pepson says there needs to be better use of legal frameworks and existing legislation which can be used by members to fast-track criminal matters.

The National newspaper reports the secretary has also called for MOUs for information sharing.
