The Pacific Concerns Resource Centre in Fiji is calling on the military to leave their guns in the armoury next time it decides to go on a walk-about in public.
The PCRC believes this would be an appropriate way to mark this week's action against small arms.
A spokesperson, Ema Tagicakibau, says the military may not realize that members of the public immediately feel a sense of threat and insecurity over their space when they see a public display of guns.
She says anything could happen and it may put innocent civilians directly in the line of fire.
Ms Tagicakibau says governments in the region need to take action over the use of guns with more than 3 million legally held by civilians in the Pacific.
She says it represents an epidemic which should be addressed as urgently by leaders as other epidemics.
