Samoa has a third free to air TV channel.

TV3 is owned by the family of former government minister of Trade and Tourism, Hans Joachim Keil.

The chief executive of the new station, Atanoa Herbert Crichton, says it is locally financed and aims to provide alternative programming and better dissemination of information to the viewing public.

TV3 can now provide coverage to about 60 percent of Samoa but over the next eight weeks the company expects it will be able to extend this reach to about 95 percent of the country.

The company will also operate a second channel carrying religious programming on behalf of the Mormon Church.
