American Samoa governor concerned over Utulei report

3:48 pm on 23 May 2006

The Governor of America Samoa believes the language in a US House committee report discouraging commercial development on Utulei Beach Park is the work of the territory's member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin.

A plan to build a new McDonalds restaurant on American Samoa's Utulei beach has sparked controversy in the territory.

Utulei is categorised as a federal park area and has received substantial funding from the National Park Services.

The US Committee report has urged the territorial government not to allow commercial development of waterfront areas of Utulei Beach Park.

But the Governor is quoted by the Samoa News saying that the staff of the US House Committee on Interior Appropriations was provided only with a story discouraging a restaurant on Utulei Beach as it is Faleomavaega's position on the matter.

He says Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin did not provide both sides of the story.
