Tongan public servants threatening more strike action

8:20 pm on 25 May 2006

Tonga's Public Service Association is threatening another nationwide strike unless its demand for an interim government is met.

"PSA has delayed its national march scheduled for today to 01 June to give government time to respond to its petition, Matangi Tonga reports."

Today's march was to be called the 'black' march, with all members wearing black to express their dissatisfaction with the current government.

The march will now take place on the same day the Legislative Assembly opens for its 2006 session.

Dr Aivi Puloka, president of PSA said another reason for the postponement in the national march was to give other supporting groups, such as the Tonga Human Rights and Democracy Movement, more time to rally supporters.

Dr Puloka said her members want an interim government to be established to replace the current cabinet led by Fred Sevele.

PSA also wants an advisory committee formed to include all members of the People's Representatives in parliament, to oversee the new interim government while the process of submitting Constitutional amendments to parliament takes its course.

These changes would mean that the current cabinet ministers are relieved off their duties while the process of possible amendments to the Tonga Constitution in parliament takes place.

Dr Aivi said they would give the Palace Office two weeks to reply.

If their demands were not acknowledged, then her members would go on a national strike.

The decision for a national march was passed during a special meeting of PSA members that was attended by 585 public servants on 19 May
