Family allowances paid to Fiji's most needy is to nearly double.

Fiji TV reports that almost 23,400 families receive some form of financial assistance from the state ranging from 17 to 51-US dollars a month.

The new minister for women, social welfare and poverty alleviation, George Shiu Raj, has told Fiji TV of these the 17,000 who receive from 17 to 34-US dollars will now receive 35-US dollars a month.

He says another 3,000 families will be brought under the net.

Mr Shiu Raj says he will be expecting his ministry to ensure that all the money allocated by the government for social welfare is spent to help the needy.
