Thousands of Fiji's sugar cane farmers will receive a total of 16.5 million US dollars today as the fourth payment of their crop last year.

The payment comes to 5.75 US dollar for every tonne of the cane they grow in a system which pays them progressively as the sugar produced from their crop is sold.

The Fiji Times reports that the Sugar Cane Growers Council has given farmers an assurance that the price for this year's crop of approximately 3.1 million tonnes will continue to be good because of attractive world market prices.

This year's cane harvesting and crushing is set to begin next week and is expected to last until December.
