Cooks faces steep power price rise

The Cook Islands electricity authority, Te Aponga Uira, is increasing its charges by an average of 16 percent from next month.

Its chief executive, Apii Timoti, says it comes after a 40 percent rise in the cost of diesel since September last year.

Mr Timoti says the new rate works out at an average of eight cents per unit across the range of tariff options.

He says charges were put up late last year, but the rise in diesel has been particularly steep over the past two months.
