Hopes review of Cook Island police will be wide reaching

8:42 am on 29 May 2006

The Cook Islands' police commissioner, Pira Wichman, says he is hoping a review of the local police force will be wide reaching.

It's been confirmed that a former New Zealand police commissioner, Rob Robinson, is to the lead review.

The comprehensive audit will be conducted jointly by the Cook Islands Government and the New Zealand aid agency, NZAID.

The police commissioner of the Cook Islands, Pira Wichman, says the Cook Islands police force has not been reviewed since 1977

But, he says he hopes all aspects of the police force will be looked at.

"My hope is that the review will be right across the board - every department within the Ministry of Police in the Cook Islands - so we can look at the review - and make the assessment and see where we go from there"

The police commissioner of the Cook Islands, Pira Wichman says he will meet with New Zealand officials tomorrow on the issue.
