A United Nations Development Progamme report says Fiji's "collapsing textile and clothing industry recorded its worst year in a decade during 2005."

The industry's exports plummeted by nearly a half and 6,000 garments workers lost their jobs in 2005.

The total textile and clothing exports earned only 69-million US dollars, down from its peak of over 180-million a year.

The most dramatic drop was seen from one of Fiji's largest garments markets, the United States, where sales plunged by nearly 80-percent to 19-million US dollars from a high of 86-million US dollars.
