French Polynesia's ruling Union For Democracy says it will defer the second reading of a proposed bill due on June the 1st.
This follows heated debate in the assembly on the so-called Sommers law aimed at redefining union leaders' representation.
The debate this week was to be on the same day as a general strike planned by the major unions in protest at the new law.
But union leaders now say the strike will still go ahead as the proposed law is only fifth on the list of grievances, with the high cost of living a major concern.
