US ambassador to Fiji identifies challenges facing the new government

The United States ambassador in Suva has identified four main challenges facing the post-election, multi-party government in Fiji.

Larry Dinger says these are reconciliation, land, poverty and the government's relations with the military.

Fiji TV reports that Mr Dinger gave his assessment at a meeting of the Fiji chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce in Suva yesterday.

He says with the elections over, the people are looking to their leaders to move the country forward, with the first challenge being to build bridges across the racial divide created at the polls.

Mr Dinger says most people in Fiji are really tired of the continuous friction and the multi-party government is a positive step to address major issues.

He says the multi-party cabinet is an opportune mechanism to let both sides help design the process of reconciliation.

On the rift between the military and the government, Mr Dinger says that friction affects confidence levels both within Fiji and abroad, and makes investors think twice about putting money into Fiji.
