Final exams in French Polynesia will go ahead despite general strike call

6:33 pm on 1 June 2006

Final exams for 2,500 students in French Polynesia will now be going ahead after three of the five trade unions decided not to go on strike tomorrow.

The two remaining unions which represent around a quarter of the workforce will take action over the territorial law on union representation and the high cost of living.

MP Myron Mataoa says the government has been negotiating with the unions all day and he believes the planned strike is politically motivated

"We can see some political parties behind supporting them, that's what I think about it. The opposition political parties are behind these two unions."
