Two French Polynesian unions have launched a general strike despite yesterday's decision by the government to abandon a proposed territorial law opposed by key unions.
The President, Oscar Temaru, withdrew the bill yesterday during negotiations with five unions - three of whom then decided to call off the planned strike.
But two unions said they would still strike today in protest at the high cost of living.
The bill at the centre of the dispute was to change union representation in line with provisions in place in France which had been opposed by the French Polynesian unions.
