The screening of Da Vinci Code movie stopped in Fiji

8:28 am on 2 June 2006

The screening of the controversial movie, The Da Vinci Code, has been stopped in Fiji ahead of today's protest march by members of the Methodist Church.

Radio Legend reports that owners of the Village 6 and Village 4 cinemas in Suva and Lautoka announced the decision this morning.

The chief executive, Dev Damodar, says the decision to stop the movie was made after consultations last night with their partners in New Zealand, the Sony Corporation which owns the movie and its distributors.

He says there will be no more screenings of the movie from today.

Mr Damodar says churches have the right to protest in a democratic country and he only hopes that good sense will prevail.

The general secretary of the Methodist Church, the Rev Ame Tugawe, has welcomed the decision to stop the movie but adds that today's protest march will go ahead.
