Fiji's new opposition leader signals fresh approach to his role

Fiji's new opposition leader, Mick Beddoes, has signaled a fresh approach to his role following his appointment yesterday.

Mr Beddoes says he and fellow opposition MP, Bernadette Rounds Ganilau, will not oppose for the sake of opposing, but shift away from the traditional adversarial type of debate and racial overtones seen in parliament.

Rather, they want to be more solution driven and will provide analysis, options and alternative ideas on how to solve problems.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says while nine of his MPs are part of the multi-party cabinet, the remainder will provide a strong opposition.

But the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and his attorney general, Qoriniasi Bale, disagree, saying a party cant be both part of the government and in opposition.
