10:56 am on 8 June 2006

The New Zealand Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, has confirmed that New Zealand will build a replacement prison for Port Vila in Vanuatu at a cost of two point five million NZ dollars.

Mr Peters visited the French Prison yesterday saying the it is on its last legs.

A second prison is in a similar state.

Mr Peters says the construction of the new prison is part of the larger plan to establish a corrections service that is separate from the police, as part of NZAID's support for improved governance.

Mr Peters and the Vanuatu Foreign Minister, Sato Kilman, are to formally launch NZAID's new five year aid strategy for Vanuatu today in Port Vila.

The package is to cost around 85 million dollars over the five years.
