Goro yet to respond to New Caledonia tribunal setback

5:46 pm on 9 June 2006

There has been no reaction from Goro Nickel in response to a court ruling casting doubt on the validity of its licence to build the two-billion US dollar plant.

A preliminary ruling by an administrative tribunal in Noumea has acknowledged a complaint by the Kanak Rheebu Nuu activists that the environmental impact study was not adequate.

A final decision is yet to be made, but Rheebu Nuu activists say they will push for further discussions.

Two months ago, Rheebu Nuu activists caused 10 million US dollars in damage at the Goro site in a protest against the project, prompting French riot police to take action.

On Monday, thousands of people took to the streets of Noumea asking for a stop to the project.

Goro Nickel issued a statement on Wednesday, saying its project is sustainable and reaffirming its commitment to respect nature and the people.

It has now also announced that it has opened a tollfree hotline for people to discuss their concerns about the Goro project.

It says if the person taking call cannot give an immediate reply, the company will endeavour to come up with an answer in 24 hours.
