Fiji's opposition nominates deputy opposition leader

11:37 am on 12 June 2006

Fiji's opposition leader, Mick Beddoes, has nominated fellow MP, Bernadette Rounds Ganilau, to be the deputy opposition leader.

Mrs Rounds Ganilau is the only other opposition MP in Fiji's 71-member House of Representatives and comes from Mr Beddoes' United People's Party.

Mr Beddoes has also nominated Mrs Rounds Ganilau to chair parliament's public accounts committee which scrutinizes all government expenditure, in particular abuses highlighted in the auditor general's reports.

The chair of this committee is traditionally held by an opposition MP.

The Fiji Labour Party, which has joined the multi-party cabinet but which claims its backbench MPs are in opposition, has not yet commented on Mrs Rounds Ganilau's appointment.
