American Samoan assault over Da Vincu code labelled public disturbance

11:41 am on 12 June 2006

A man who assaulted the general manager of Nu'uuli Place Cinemas in American Samoa over the Da Vinci Code movie has been charged with public peace disturbance.

Makelani Robert was taken into custody after the altercation last Friday evening at the movie theatre.

The general manager of the Cinemas, Robert Vernon, is declining comment on the attack and has referred enquiries to company headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

But he did say that the incident will not stop the Da Vinci code movie from being shown here.

Witnesses say they overhead the defendant shouting to the manager that his church was against the movie and it should not be shown.
