Solomon PM sacks ministers on remand

7:06 pm on 12 June 2006

The Solomon Islands prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has sacked his two ministers who have been in remand for nearly two months on charges of inciting the Honiara riots.

The two are the police minister, Charles Dausabea, and the tourism minister, Nelson Ne'e - neither of whom has set foot in their office as they are still awaiting trial.

Shortly after they were arrested, Mr Sogavare made them ministers but a top official says replacements are needed because of pressing matters in their relevant departments.

Isaac Inoke has been made the new police minister and Bently Samuel Ragosamani has been given the tourism portfolio.
