Fiji's deputy speaker of the House of Representatives says he will not lose his seat

The Deputy Speaker of Fiji's House of Representatives, Niko Nawaikula, says he is not bankrupt and would not lose his parliamentary seat.

Mr Nawaikula's statement comes after the publication of a notice by the government's official receiver last Saturday that the Suva Magistrate's Court had issued a Receiving Order against Mr Nawaikula.

But Mr Nawaikula has told the Fiji Sun newspaper that the magistrate's court has granted a stay order on the court proceedings because the High Court is determining whether a solicitor is liable to pay the debts of his clients.

Mr Nawaikula says he is facing a lawsuit because the debt belonged to the former general manager of the Native Lands Trust Board, the late Marika Qarikau.

He says the move to take him to court was influenced by the Labour Party.
