The Samoan government has been urged by a new member of parliament for the ruling Human Rights Protection Party to relocate the over 100-year old prison built by the former German rulers.

The main prison is located close to several villages within the MP's constituency.

The new MP and former Manu Samoa player Solamalemalo Keneti Sio said people's belongings have been stolen in day time.

He alleges inmates could easily run away during working hours and get access to family homes because the prison is very close to where they live.

A private college is also located about 300 meters from the main jail which houses prisoners serving life sentence for murder, including two former cabinet ministers of the ruling party.
