Oil palm strike looms in Papua New Guinea

9:01 am on 20 June 2006

Papua New Guinea oil palm growers in Hoskins say they will resort to industrial action this week if their demands are not met by the government.

The Post Courier reports the Hoskins Oil Palm Growers Association sent a petition to Agriculture Minister, Mathew Siune calling for a review of the current pricing formula that expired in 2005.

The growers gave an expiry date of 30 days but have yet to have a response from Mr Siune or the New Britain Palm Oil Limited.

The Oil Palm association says the current formula worked in favour of New Britain Palm Oil.

It says growers have agreed to stage a peaceful sit in protest if there continues to be no response.
