Japan Airlines plans charter flights to Marshall Islands

Japan Airlines wants to begin charter flights to the Marshall Islands later this year.

The Foreign Minister Gerald Zackios said that the airport may not be ready for JAL's direct service linking Majuro with Tokyo.

The US government is funding $20 million US dollars worth of repairs to the airport runway.

The airport also needs equipment to load cargo and passengers to get on and off JAL's Boeing-767 aircraft.

JAL officials estimated that specialized ground-handling equipment would cost around half a million US dollars.

The Japanese airline hopes to get the necessary approvals to begin flying to Majuro in November.
