American Samoa's Commissioner of Public Safety, Sotoa Savali has recommended to the Director of Manpower Resources that a veteran police officer be fired from the force.

Lieutenant Lanu Mapu pled no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving in December last year, after the car he was driving hit a man who was crossing the road and killed him.

Sotoa says his decision is based on a recommendation of an internal board of inquiry which reviewed Mapu's case.

Lieutenant Mapu returned to his job earlier this year.

Sotoa says he is awaiting a decision from the Director of Human Resources.
